Košljun, small Island in Punat town with monestery and Museum.

Košljun - an oasis of peace and spirituality

Košljun is a small island in the Punat bay, known for its Franciscan monastery. Košljun enchants visitors with its incredible nature and rich cultural heritage.

The islet of Košljun is located in the embrace of the island of Krk, more precisely in the Puntarska draga, between Punat and the town of Krk. Košljun is small in area, with only 6 hectares, a coastline 1075 m long, and its highest point is only 6 m above the sea.

The Franciscans live on Košljun, and the Franciscan monastery has been there since 1447. Even during the Roman era, there was a fortified villa rustica on Košljun, and from the Latin word castellum - which means castle, fortress - Košljun got its name.

In the 11th century, the Benedictines arrived on Košljun, and in the 15th century, the Frankopan princes invited the Franciscans to the abandoned Benedictine monastery, who have been permanent residents of the island ever since.

The Franciscans shared Krk's turbulent history with the islanders, and their ethnographic collection is very interesting and will reveal a lot about the life of the island and its inhabitants.

The church of St. Bernardine, built by the Benedictines, houses a permanent collection of sacred art that is definitely worth seeing. The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was completed in 1523, on the site of a former Benedictine church.

You will be amazed by the 10 m wide and 4.6 m high painting on canvas by Francesco Ughetto from 1654, which impressively depicts hell, purgatory and heaven. Also very interesting is the polyptych by Girolamo da Santa Croce from 1535, which, along with St. Quirinus, the patron saint of the nearby town of Krk, the figures of the saints are depicted as the Frankopan princes who donated funds to the Franciscans for the completion of the church and monastery. You will certainly be impressed by the interestingly painted beams of the open roof of the church.

In Košljun, in addition to the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the Church of St. Bernardine, there are also 3 chapels, as well as the Stations of the Cross, and the Chapel of the Nativity with a nativity scene, which was first mentioned in 1651, is especially famous.

Košljun is also known for its rich library of as many as 30,000 books, some of which are as old as the monastery. Košljun also houses one of only 3 remaining copies of Ptolemy's Atlas published in Venice in 1511.

Košljun will also delight you with its nature - it is protected as a forest park, primarily because of the forest of centuries-old holm oaks (Quercus ilex), it is also interesting to see real laurel trees (Laurus nobilis) as well as a lush forest of black ash (Orno-Quercetum ilicis).

On just 6 hectares there are as many as 389 plant species and 151 species of mushrooms. The island is permeated with the scent of the sea and the aromatic herbs that abound. We definitely recommend that you explore some of the numerous paths through the interior of the island and enjoy the peace, scents of herbs and the atmosphere of spirituality...

Upon arrival at Košljun, in the small harbor, you will be greeted by the figure of St. Francis with a wolf, a depiction of the legend of how St. Francis tamed a wolf, and at the entrance to the atrium is written in Glagolitic script the Franciscan greeting – peace and good!

Nearby Punat is 800 m from Košljun and only a 10-minute pleasant boat ride separates you from an oasis of peace and spirituality - the islet of Košljun with its Franciscan monastery. Don't miss out on experiencing this unique islet that has so much to show you, and which will surely inspire and delight you.

The church of St. Chrysogonus, built sometime in the 12th century, is located above the Čavlena bay and is now off the beaten track, but this area clearly once played a much more important role. According to the islanders, it was a votive church for sailors and fishermen. Today, the building has been partially restored, is located on marked hiking trails, and is interesting to visit during a pleasant walk.
